Home Tech Trends & GE’s Advances Pharmaceutical Filtration

kitchen gadgets - Chief Cook - March 17, 2016

Good cooking is only made easier with the advances in kitchen tech. GE and TrendHunters released the top 5 tech trends for 2016, and showcased how GE is leading the way.

Dual Purpose Prep

Appliances have to have more than one purpose. Why? Multi-tasking is the norm for Millennials (1982-1994), who work on an average of 3 screens, and Gen Z’s (1995-2009) have an average 8-second attention span. Tech that allows you to do more is leading designs.

Clean Connectivity

Intuitive designs that easy connect the user to its functions, and look stylish enough to be part of the decor. Clean designs mean that they’re easier to use.

Remixed Retro

I love a good retro-inspired look – especially retro-kitchens. And we live in an era where almost any retro-inspired designs can be accessible, and still coordinate with modern decor.

DIY Health

The topic of health is constantly present. We care about our bodies and what goes into them. That’s why technology is bringing DIY health back into the home in an accessible way, such as kitchen herb gardens.

Connected Home

We all dream of the Jetson’s home, where all the pieces of technology work together to connect the home and the people who live in it. And technology is advancing closer, with biometric security systems, and ways to connect your home energy use to your phone.

GE’s Advanced Pharmaceutical Filtration

Surveys have shown that 2 in 10 Americans drinking water tested positive for pharmaceuticals, and 65% of people are concerned about the quality and safety of their drinking water. So GE has developed a filtration system that removes 15 different contaminants and at least 94% of the top 5 trace pharmaceuticals (ibuprofen, atenolol, fluoxetine, progesterone, trimethoprim).

And the best news, is that GE is now offering the Advanced Pharmaceutical Filtration systems across all its new refrigerators. Better water = better food.

New Pop-up Restaurant in Toronto – The Cantina by Campbell’s

healthy "fast" food, Soups & Stews - Chief Cook - February 1, 2016

I love getting new ideas for classic recipes. If there’s a way to take a favourite dish and make it fresh and new I get really excited.

Which is why I’ll be heading down to The Cantina by Campbell’s in Toronto. Chef Matt Dean Pettit from Rock Lobster will be taking classic soups and broths to make some amazing new soup creations. I can’t wait to see what he’ll come up with, and what fresh garnishes he recommends.

And if great soup wasn’t a good enough reason to check out the pop-up restaurant, it’s also an opportunity to do something good. For every sticker placed on the pop-up restaurant’s mosaic wall, Campbell’s Canada will donate a can of soup to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Make sure to check out the restaurant yourself, take a selfie with your soup creation and share it using #weallsoup.

EVENT DATES: Tuesday, February 2nd  – Sunday, February 21st
WHERE: 501 Queen Street West, Toronto

HOURS OF OPERATION:
Monday – Friday 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Holiday Baking #CTChristmas

Cookies, Desserts, Holidays - Chief Cook - December 18, 2015

There’s only one week left until Christmas. So our family is doing one last great baking marathon this weekend.

From gingerbread men to shortbread cookies, and yes, even a fruitcake or two. There’ll be flour everywhere and I’m sure we’ll run out of something and have to make a last minute trip to the store to get ingredients. But as a family activity it’s one of my favourites. We’ll turn on some Christmas music, put on our aprons and get mixing!

If you’re looking for some baking inspiration, check out some of my other posts:

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Okay, I Could Totally Do This Myself

Do you have some family favourites that you make every year? Share your family’s favourite holiday baking in the comments!

Christmas Shopping Tips #CTChristmas

Holidays, Tips & Tricks - Chief Cook - December 11, 2015

Greeting card with new year

Only 14 days left until Christmas, which means only two more weekends to get your Christmas shopping done. If you’re like me and have barely started (or not started at all) you may think it’s time to start panicking. But fear not, I have some tips to help you relax and tackle your to-dos in an orderly fashion:

  1. Make a list and stick to it. There’s nothing more stressful than the guild of feeling like you over spent. Do your research before hand so you know what you’re in for and shop within your means. What’s everyone getting? What is it going to cost approximately? Where can I get it?
  2. Shop online. Many online shops have a quick turnaround time on shipping. Just to be safe though, I’d recommend ordering by the end of this weekend. Otherwise, you might find yourself on December 21 beginning to wonder if it’ll show up on time.
  3. Go into stores early. No one likes a crowded mall – it’s stressful trying to fight through the crowds. Find out what time the store opens and get there early. It doesn’t have to be right at 9 am, but after lunch is a bad time. Plus, going early gives you the rest of your day to sit back and enjoy a cup of spiced eggnog.
  4. Give experiences. Not sure what to get that person who has everything? Consider tickets to a concert, play, or an upcoming wine or scotch fest. Give them something they can go do rather than have. And make sure there are two tickets so they can take someone along (hopefully you!).
  5. Wrap it up! A lot of malls have wrapping services that donates the money to a charity. Save yourself some headache and time by dropping the gifts off with them while you go enjoy a latte.

Christmas Markets #CTChristmas

Holidays - Chief Cook - December 4, 2015

CTChristmasMarkeet

Christmas Markets are one of the most enchanting parts of the holidays! Lining the streets of the markets are adorable food and craft stands and overhead are strings and strings of twinkling lights. It’s a great activity for everyone in the family – during the day there are lots of entertainers for kids and at night the streets are lined with booths for sweets and stronger sipping ciders.

IMG_0871 (1)

I visited the Toronto Christmas Market last weekend and it was a magical night! True to the family spirit of the holidays, I brought my mother as my date for the night. Toronto’s historic Distillery district was transformed into a festive fiesta! We ate on the patio of one of the restaurants. Initially I was opposed to the idea of sitting outside in the Canadian winter weather but the patio was equipped with blazing fires, outdoor heaters, and wool blankets. After dinner we wandered the streets to the tune of live Christmas carolers while we sipped Hot Toddies. There were so many adorable stands – you could snack on everything from traditional poutine to sprinkle-covered Stax pastries!

There are large Christmas markets in Vancouver, Kitchener, and Quebec, as well as smaller ones in cities across the country!

It’s definitely worth a trip to your local Christmas market – tis the season after all!

A Revolution of Canadian Cookbooks: Mairlyn Smith’s Homegrown

Beef, Cookbooks, Fun, Recipes - Chief Cook - December 3, 2015

Source: Eatnorth.com

A Comedian, a home economist, and a writer – it’s hard to think that a person can be all these things at the same time, but Mairlyn Smith likes to challenge the unimaginable and represents just that. As a renowned food personality in Canada, Mairlyn has captured the attention of Canadian foodies from across the nation with her popular cookbooks such as Healthy Start’s Here!, Ultimate Foods for Ultimate Health and The Vegetarian’s Complete Quinoa

She is going to be delighting her fans once again with the newest addition to her line of recipe books with Homegrown. Smith is on a serious mission to revive good eating, basic culinary skills and, honestly, just general kitchen common sense. Not only does Mairlyn presents an amazing collection of Canadian recipe’s, the book also represents a collection that primarily focuses on Canadian-grown ingredients. The great aspect about her new book is that she highlights the different local products consumers can use for the recipes and especially focuses on the various agricultural products found from the Pacific coastline to the cool shores of PEI. It is evident that her book will classify Canada’s sprawling geography and bring attention to the different and diverse local products Canadians can enjoy.

Officially being released on December 7th, you can preorder your book at Chapters Indigo here. Now you can enjoy over 160 authentic Canadian recipes with locally produced ingredients such as Gluten-Free PEI Potato Lasagna, Red Lentil Waffles with Pear Sauce, and Asian-Style Nova Scotia Scallops with Miso Glaze. She also has some of our FAVORITE beef recipes made with homegrown Canadian Beef –  because Canada’s the perfect place for raising beef!
